Laughless Saint NPCs and Characters
A note on names before anything else
This is the single messiest area of documentation for this game. NerveLabs has published no cast list, community walkthroughs transcribe names by ear, and the same character routinely appears under two or three spellings — occasionally within one video.
We list the spellings we have actually seen and mark them unconfirmed rather than picking a favourite and presenting it as canon. Where a name is confirmed by an official patch note, we say so.
Magdal Rest residents
| Character | Where | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Peaches | Toward the skull from the town entrance | Merchant. Gives Nuisance and the Fisherman’s Friend ring quest |
| Bog / Bok | The tavern, “the Form of the Skull”, or by the well | Gives Dark Water. Perpetually thirsty |
| Bronwyn / Brunwin | North from tavern then left; also described in the southern swamp | Alchemist. Sells supplies, diagnoses the well curse (alchemy) |
| Ramba / Remba, true name Nakanak | Wanders — often the beach | Reformed thief. Gives Right Where I Found It. Trains sneak |
| Hyrum | Behind tavern, past alchemist, over the bridges, up the stairs | Locked out of his own house (Locked Out) |
| The moon-faced man | Inside Hyrum’s house | Cursed by the Saint. Drives Moon in the Man |
| Chiani / Chi Alani | Market square, staircase between tavern and shop, second floor of the hut | Advises on the moon-face curse; points you to the hermit |
| The jinn — Theodorus / Theodoris / Seadorus / Siadoras | Behind the shop, into the tavern, right toward the well | Apprentice jinn. Teaches magic. Gives The Lost Tome and Mentoring Magic |
| The seer | Magdal Rest | A fortune teller “with true sight and not after your coins” |
| Krizur | Merchant | Accepts stolen goods; given a robust inventory in Update 7 |
| The fool on the hill | Crossroad south of Peaches, on the way to the skeletons | Sits on a hill by the road. One walkthrough author passed him without speaking to him, noting “maybe he’s not a fool” |
| A one-handed weapons trainer | Magdal Rest | Greets you with “off on a fool’s journey to feed yourself to the tower, or into the jungle to feed yourself to the beasts?” and trains one-handed weapons |
| Pichess | Merchant | Sells a healing spell as of Update 7 |
Krizur and Pichess are the two names on this page confirmed by official patch notes rather than transcription, so their spellings are reliable.
Beyond the town
| Character | Where | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Bartolomaeus / Bartolomeos | House with a snail in the garden, south of the Tower | Wizard. Delivery target for Mentoring Magic. Has the Recall spell |
| The real Ramba | Tsaffon ruins, east | A cat who lost her identity. Grants Remembrance of Past |
| An’Dalus — the rusted knight | Top of a tower, far west | Rusted solid. Gives Rust in Peace. Trains armour |
| Peter | Inside the Tower, left after the first lever | A skeleton who wants you to find an egg |
| Detta | Small island, far south | Hermit skilled in transformation magic. You need his journal, not him |
| The madman | Beach near the starting boat | Has the stolen tome. Hostile |
Trainers
Worth pulling out separately, since training is easy to walk past:
- Ramba/Nakanak — sneak, after Right Where I Found It
- An’Dalus — armour, after Rust in Peace
- The jinn — magic basics, after The Lost Tome; corrupting spells if you lie in Mentoring Magic
- Bronwyn — alchemy training was observed at 25 gold
The cast is deliberately strange
The official description sets expectations honestly:
“A giant toad learning to read. An ancient skeleton who just wants to swim. A musician from a faraway land hunts for something precious. Everyone has a theory for why you’re here. None of them agree.”
We have not verified the toad or the musician against a route, so they are not in the tables above — but they tell you what kind of cast this is. Everyone on the island arrived following the same dream and most do not remember the journey.
NPC behaviour changed a lot in week one
If an NPC is behaving oddly, check whether it was a known bug:
| Fix | Update |
|---|---|
| Chialani no longer self-immolates by accident | Hotfix 1 |
| NPCs no longer get stuck on beds after sleeping, and stop self-immolating | Hotfix 4 |
| A quest NPC is no longer mercy killed by vicious frogs | Hotfix 5 |
| NPC persistence and appearance consistency fixed | Hotfix 5 |
| Merchants regenerate stock only up to a limit, not infinitely | Update 6 |
| Many voice lines recut or added for the first time | Update 6 and 7 |
Note that Chialani appears in an official patch note with that exact spelling — which is the strongest evidence we have for how that name is actually written.
