Laughless Saint Spell Crafting Guide
What spell crafting actually is
The Steam store page lists “fully featured spell crafting and alchemy systems” as headline features, and they are the systems the game is most often compared to Morrowind for. A reviewer covering the early access build described them as “very ambitious systems they’ve already got for the most part implemented.”
The important mental shift, and the one most new players get wrong, is what the system is for. A guide covering things the game does not explain put it bluntly: stop using spell crafting like a weapon upgrade screen, and use it like a toolbox.
The mistake is always asking “How do I make this hit harder?” A better question is “What part of this fight do I need the spell to change?”
Confirmed effects
Effects that have been directly observed in the shipped build include:
- Fire — straightforward destruction damage
- Shield — protection, useful when you are outnumbered
- Paralysis — control, which is the effect that changes fights most
Because a custom spell can be built around a problem rather than a number, the practical approach is to identify what you keep dying to — being swarmed, being outranged, losing control of a fight — and build the answer.
We are deliberately not publishing a full effect list or numeric magnitudes. NerveLabs has not documented them, the system was rebalanced during our research window, and inventing values would make this page worse than useless.
Fortify effects are stronger than they look
One of the more Morrowind-like properties of this game is that it does not put hard guardrails around stacking. Extreme skill fortification has been reported to produce results well beyond combat maths — including movement fast enough to cross large portions of the map.
That means fortify is a traversal tool, not just a combat buff. If a combination feels absurd, that is not automatically a bug; the game is relaxed about players bending its rules. See fast travel for how this interacts with getting around the island.
Rebalance history
Spell crafting has changed since launch, so treat any guide written in the first days of early access with suspicion:
| Date | Change | Update |
|---|---|---|
| 19 Aug 2026 | Unlock spell became craftable | Hotfix 5 |
| 20 Aug 2026 | Jump spell added; identical spells no longer stack effects | Update 6 |
| 21 Aug 2026 | Spellcrafting “refined / rebalanced”; alchemy effects now show in the UI when discovered | Update 7 |
The “identical spells no longer stack effects” line in Update 6 is the one to note — potions still stack effects correctly, but spells were explicitly changed. Any pre-20 August guide describing spell stacking is out of date.
Before you can craft
You need to be taught magic first, which is a quest, not a menu unlock. See how to cast spells.
