Locked Out Quest: Hyrum Door
The quest
Hyrum has been locked out of his own house by a stranger who ran inside. He wants you to unlock the door and get him out.
“Some cursed fool ran into my house and locked me out. I left my key on my bed as I always do and forgot to grab it. I want you to unlock the door and get him out.”
Note the word “cursed.” He means it literally.
Finding Hyrum
From the start of town:
- Go straight ahead to the tavern
- Go behind it and turn left
- Pass the alchemist’s house
- Cross the wooden bridges, sticking to the left side
- Up the stairs — he is there
The door is a trap for new players
The obvious approach is to pick the lock. You cannot: the door requires lockpicking 60. At the point in the game where this quest is available, that is far out of reach.
This is the game teaching you one of its core lessons: a locked door is usually a puzzle about the building, not about your skill sheet. See lockpicking for the full picture, including the craftable Unlock spell as an alternative.
Get in through the chimney
- Go to the ruined home nearby
- Go up the hill from there
- From the high ground you can jump into the chimney
- Get out of the fireplace quickly — there is a fire burning in it
The key is not where he said
Hyrum told you the key was on his bed. It is not.
The key is on the table. Take it and unlock the door from the inside. That completes the first objective.
Small detail, but it is characteristic of this game: NPCs give you directions in good faith and are sometimes simply wrong. The same thing happens with the shack in Nuisance, where “one storey building with a stool outside” describes most of the town.
The intruder
Inside is a strange man with a moon for a face. Getting information out of him is hard work, but he mentions charcoal, a blank book, and something about magic.
Once you are done talking, a new quest appears in your journal: Moon in the Man.
That quest is how you actually resolve this one. The intruder will not leave until his curse is dealt with — and the curse was placed by the Saint. Full walkthrough on Moon in the Man.
Resolution
When Moon in the Man completes, the transformation frees the man and he leaves the house. Both quests close together.
Hyrum’s response makes clear you had other options:
“By the gods, that took forever. Next time just hit them on the head with a very large stick and be done.”
You could have killed him. Most quests here have multiple resolutions — mercy, violence, compromise or deceit — and the Amphitheater seats a different phantom depending on which you chose. Helping the cursed man is the longer route; it is also the one that puts a trusted figure in your audience rather than something darker.
